What We Do

Community Bikes SA strives to encourage a fruitful, healthy lifestyle by integrating bicycling into Southern African communities' lives. The aim is improved lining, the tool is the bike. Above all we strive to show how much fun and enjoyment there is in biking.

The bike is the most efficient form of HPV (human powered vehicle) there is known to man. It is more efficient (in moving us around) than walking! There are many spin-offs:

  • Reduced carbon emissions at a time when the earth is in need of reducing the pollutants we put into the atmosphere. There are a number of was of calculating this.
  • Improved health. One fifth of Americans are clinically obese and one third of South Africans have now joined them.
  • A brake on diabetes which is a massive problem in Southern Africa today.
  • Saving money at the same time. It costs in the order of R4 per kilometer to run a car!! So you save R40-00 each time you cycle 10kms instead of driving the equivalent.
  • So there is also less money spent on taxi and bus fare than can be put to other uses.
  • Improved performance and concentration at school and at work. There is mounting evidence that cycling to school and work improves productivity (and does not make the rider tired or lethargic - just the opposite).
So come on - get biking!

Trailers

We are trying to improve the way bikes are used by increasing their load capacity. Our simple bike trailers, made in the backyard of an Alexander home by an unemployed welder, can carry up to 100kgs load. This makes the bikes easy to use for income generation projects. These can include:

  • Deliveries (fast food, newspapers, medicines for chemists, etc)
  • Recycling (collecting paper, plastic, tin and metal, etc)
  • Sales (ice creams, handicrafts, household goods, etc)
  • Trading from bikes (snacks and food sales at schooles and events, etc)
And the best is, when the tralier is not in use, it can be easily unhitched, parked and the bike is back to transport and fun.
